The term “trellis” usually connotes a wooden frame covered
in vines and climbing plants. But a trellis doesn’t necessarily
have to be draped in foliage to be worthwhile. This trellis is completely
free of ascending foliage but is nonetheless an attractive outdoor
feature thanks to some unique accent panels.
The panels are made of ordinary copper flashing, and contrary to their
aged appearance, they were crafted specifically for this project.
The patina formed literally overnight with the help of an oxidizing
solution. |

| But more than the simulated
age of the panels, it’s the raised image visible in each one
that makes them compelling. These are surprisingly easy to fashion
using a modern twist on an ancient technique called repoussé.
In the simplest terms, it amounts to little more than pounding the
shape into the panel from the backside. Click on the online extras
above for more details. |
