This Barnes Cast-iron mortising machine is a perfect example of 19th and early 20th century foot-powered tools. To use the mortiser, the operator steps on a spring-loaded pedal, which lowers a beveled bit into the stock. A handle on top of the shaft allows the bit to rotate.
